The filing period for candidates closed Tuesday. Jasper County Two soon-to-be-open posts attracted the most attention. Six candidates signed up to run for the county assessor’s office to be vacated by Don Davis next year, and five contenders filed for county coroner, an office incumbent Jerry Neil does not plan to seek again. There are three candidates each for two other offices — Eastern District county commissioner and public administrator — and the filers include the current officeholders. Only one Democrat filed: J.D. Love, of Joplin, for coroner. He earlier held the coroner’s post by appointment. The remaining candidates are Republicans, meaning those races will be determined by primary voting in August. Only three officeholders attracted no opposition. Sheriff Archie Dunn, Treasurer Wilma “Jeannie” Wells and Western District Commissioner Darieus K. Adams will be running unopposed. Among the six candidates running for assessor, Larry R. Carsten, of Joplin, currently works in the office, and Connie Alumbaugh-Hoover, of Carthage, is a former employee. Other candidates are Brent Hensley, Joplin; Danny Drake, Webb City; Jeff Hammons, Carl Junction; and Gary Allison, Carthage. Republican candidates for coroner are Scott Keatts, Webb City; Rob Chappel, Joplin; Don LeMasters Jr., Carthage; and Shane R. Moore, Carthage. On the ballot for the Eastern District commissioner’s post are Jim Honey, Carthage, the incumbent; Craig J. Putnam, Carthage; and Blane Mitchell, Carthage. Filing for public administrator were Rita Hunter, Joplin, the incumbent; Angie Casavecchia Ashens, Carl Junction; and J.L. “Monty” Morgan, Carthage. Newton County Incumbent Sheriff Ken Copeland is seeking a second term in office. He is opposed on the Republican ticket by Mike Langland, a former sergeant with the department. Langland finished second to Copeland in a five-person race for the Republican nomination in 2004.
