Five vie for three R-8 school board seats

Five candidates are running for three open seats on the Joplin R-8 Board of Education, but only one incumbent is among them.
Board members Bo Lee and Mark Smith are not running for re-election this year. Incumbent Jim Meadows is running alongside Randy Steele, Jeff Flowers, Mark Jones and Phil Willcoxon.
Oddly enough, Tuesday’s election will mark the first “run” for public office for each candidate — including the incumbent Meadows, who has never been elected to the board.
Meadows was appointed last April to finish the remainder of Rhonda Randall’s term. She resigned when she moved out of the district.
Steele, 46, is a fabricator for EaglePicher Technologies. He has lived in the Joplin school district all of his life.
Steele graduated in 1979 from Joplin Parkwood High School and has an associate’s degree in business. He has a daughter who has already graduated from Joplin High School.
He is a former president of the Band Boosters’ Club at JHS, and has worked on a bond-issue campaign and is a coordinator for this year’s baccalaureate.
Meadows, 53, is a patent attorney in private practice. He has lived in Joplin for six years.
Meadows has a bachelor’s in chemistry from Oklahoma State University, master’s degrees in chemistry and biotechnology, and a law degree from the University of San Diego. He has a son who attends Joplin High School.
He has been a booster for the speech and debate team.
Flowers, 41, is the director of the Independent Living Center in Joplin. He has lived in Joplin since 1979.
Flowers has a bachelor’s in economics from Missouri Southern State University and a master’s in human resources from Pittsburg State University. He has two children who attend Memorial Middle School and Stapleton Elementary.
He was co-chairman of a bond-issue-campaign committee and currently serves on the Persistence to Graduation Committee.
