Randy Steele, Jeff Flowers and Phil Willcoxon were elected Tuesday to serve three-year terms on the Joplin R-8 Board of Education. They will be sworn in during the board’s meeting on Monday.

The three ran against incumbent Jim Meadows and newcomer Mark Jones.

Flowers received the most votes, with 1,886. He was followed by Steele, with 1,843; Willcoxon, with 1,777; Meadows, with 1,416; and Jones, with 1,191, according to complete, unofficial returns.

Flowers, who is executive director of the Independent Living Center, said he is ready to do what the community wants him to do.

“I can lend my talents to help out the excellent board already in place,” he said. “I’m ready to do what voters want me to do because they are the ones who put me there.”

Flowers was co-chairman of the committee that helped pass a $57.3 million bond issue last year to build two new middle schools, and renovate and expand an existing middle school.

Steele, a fabricator for EaglePicher Technologies in Joplin, said: “I’m thrilled and ready to serve. I’m thankful for all who supported me during the campaign and by voting for me.”

Willcoxon said he also is excited about serving the district.

“I’m looking forward to serving on the board and making some positive changes,” he said.

Doug Cavagnaro, of Joplin, said he cast votes for Willcoxon, Flowers and Jones. He said he voted for Willcoxon because of his experience. The two men work together at Freeman Health System, where Willcoxon is senior vice president of administration.

“I work at Freeman, and I have seen some of the work he’s done,” Cavagnaro said. “He has a good education, and he’ll be a good proponent for Joplin.”

Deborah Scott, of Joplin, said she voted for candidates with wide educational experiences. She cast her votes for Meadows, Flowers and Jones, she said.

“I voted for people with higher educations and more diverse backgrounds,” Scott said. “The more diverse their experiences, the better they will be for Joplin.”
