Taking advantage of Matt Blunt’s abrupt exit from the race, Nixon outraised the two Republican gubernatorial candidates, U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof and state Treasurer Sarah Steelman. But the victory may be short-lived. Though Nixon still has the biggest war chest, Hulshof and Steelman raised more than $2 million combined over the last three months. Here’s a breakdown of their fund-raising activity between January and April: n Hulshof raised $906,683.35 and has spent $174,308.53 so far. Twenty different Republican-party committees made donations of $10,000 or more. n Steelman raised $1,159,103 and spent $29,457.69. Twenty-five Republican-party committees made donations of more than $10,000. n Nixon raised $1,483,649.72 and has spent $521,691.92. Though he came in first, the two Republicans combined raised more than Nixon. It’s likely that whoever the Republican candidate is will have no problem keeping pace with Nixon, erasing any perceived financial advantage. The April fund-raising numbers and the accompanying campaign have brought up a few other interesting points: n Hulshof received $263,675 from Republican district committees that donated more than $10,000 across the state; Steelman raked in $317,050 from similar committees. At first glance, it appears Steelman’s financial advantage means she may be gaining favor and endorsements from those areas. That’s not the case: Many of the districts made similar contributions to both candidates. Hulshof, meanwhile, announced in April that he has 67 endorsements among Republican lawmakers, including many in Southwest Missouri, such as state Sen. Gary Nodler and state Reps. Ed Emery, Steve Hunter, Marilyn Ruestman and Kevin Wilson. Steelman hasn’t released a list of endorsements for her. n Another question is what Hulshof and Steelman plan to do with money they raised before deciding to run for governor.
