Boren draws Democratic challenger in Oklahoma

Democratic U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, of Muskogee, has picked up a primary challenger, Kevin Coleman, of Grove, in his bid for re-election in Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District.

Coleman, 46, is making his first bid for elected office. He acknowledges having voted for George W. Bush in the past two presidential elections, but expresses a disappointment with the president on several fronts that led to his switch to the Democratic Party.

Coleman also acknowledges, though, that he remains closer to Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul than to most Democrats in his thinking on the nation’s monetary system and fiscal policies.

“I’m running as a Democrat because I believe that is my best option of getting into Congress,” Coleman told the Globe in a recent telephone interview.

He points to a decided advantage for Democrats in voter registration rolls for the 2nd Congressional District.

Coleman is a self-employed real-estate investor and renovator of older homes who moved back to Oklahoma two years ago. He was born in Washington, D.C., and lived in Oklahoma previously, from 1988 through 1996, obtaining an associate degree in 1993 in applied science from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami.

The Democratic challenger refers to Boren as “a corporatist” under the influence of the political action committees that contribute to his campaigns and controlled by powerful lobbies, such as the natural-gas and oil industry.

“I believe people are looking for someone that’s not influenced by the power brokers in Washington, D.C.,” Coleman said.

Boren, 34, is seeking a third term representing the district. He was a state representative prior to first winning his seat in Congress in 2004. He obtained a bachelor of science degree in economics in 1997 from Texas Christian University and a master of business administration degree in 2001 in international business from the University of Oklahoma.

While Boren is a heavy, if not prohibitive, favorite to win the primary, he told the Globe in a telephone interview last week that he has been campaigning hard and has some television ads planned. He said he knows little about Coleman or his positions on issues.

“While we take every candidate seriously, I don’t take seriously things a candidate may say whom I haven’t even seen,” Boren said. “This is a serious job for serious people.”

The incumbent said he stands on his record of representing the district’s needs the past four years.

“I’ve been on the ground in Picher twice when tornadoes hit, bringing with us the director of Homeland Security and the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, not to mention being in Ottawa County when the floods occurred,” Boren said.
