JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) —The AP reports that Democrat Attorney General Jay Nixon defeats Republican Rep. Kenny Hulshof in Missouri’s race for governor.
Nixon’s win was based on an analysis of information from voters interviewed as they left polling places Tuesday. The interviews were conducted for The Associated Press by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International.
Nixon and Hulshof had focused their campaigns on the economy, education and health care while casting each other as big spenders incapable of changing Missouri’s Capitol.
Nixon had been campaigning for three years. But Hulshof entered the race only after Republican Gov. Matt Blunt announced unexpectedly in January that he would not seek a second term.
