Voters in Silver Creek Village in Newton County today are casting ballots on a $3 million revenue bond issue for construction of a sewer system and a half-cent sales tax.
Dee Malinowski, a retired school teacher, said she voted against the sewer project because of the cost.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea at all,” Malinowski said. “I can’t really afford another $50 to $80 a month.”
She said she didn’t vote on the sales tax issue.
A village official has estimated the average monthly cost to residents to be between $52 and $55.
Kathy Worley, 69, a retired grocery store worker, said she voted in favor of both the sewer issue and the sales tax. She said a public sewer system is simply a better option than private septic systems. She said the sales tax will give the village more money to make improvements.
Lonnie O’Dell said he also voted in favor of both the sewer issue and the sales tax issue.
“I think it’s something the village needs,” O’Dell said of the sewer system. “In the long run, it will probably increase our property values.”
Regarding the sales tax, O’Dell said tax dollars are needed for improvements.
