Sarah Steelman closed ground in July, but Kenny Hulshof still leads in fund raising among Republican gubernatorial candidates going into Tuesday’s Missouri primary.

Hulshof, a U.S. congressman, has raised more than $2.6 million to date, including more than $241,000 between July 1 and July 24, the latest reporting period. He had nearly $426,772 in the bank as of July 24, according to fund-raising reports filed Monday with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

Between July 1 and July 24, Steelman, Missouri treasurer, collected more than $330,000, almost $90,000 more than Hulshof. She reported a total of $2.3 million raised, with cash on hand at $503,319.

Democratic gubernatorial front-runner Jay Nixon, Missouri attorney general, reported raising $8.3 million to date, with $2.9 million cash on hand. He raised $92,345 between July 1 and July 24.

Craig Putnam, a challenger for Eastern District county commissioner, with more than $28,000, and Rita Hunter, incumbent public administrator, with nearly $27,000, were the top fund-raisers.

Jim Honey, incumbent candidate for Eastern District commissioner, reported collections of $18,630, followed by Gary Allison, one of six contenders for assessor, at $10,330.

Putnam lent his campaign $22,500, while Hunter and Allison each made loans of $7,000 to their campaigns, according to the reports.

Hunter reported contributions through Monday at $26,726. Nearly $10,000 came from various campaign committees for members of the Missouri House of Representatives, where her husband, Steve Hunter, serves as 127th District representative.

Rita Hunter also reported contributions of nearly $5,000 from nursing homes where she has placed county wards in Joplin, Springfield, Sedalia and Hannibal. She reported contributions of $3,000 each that were received, then returned, to the 12th District legislative committee and the 19th District legislative committee, both with headquarters in St. Charles.

Among Hunter’s two challengers, Angie Casavecchia Ashens reported contributions of $8,937, while Monty Morgan reported $3,300.

Ashens’ funding included a loan of $1,450 she made to her campaign. The largest individual contributions reported were $650 each from Don Johnson, Carl Junction; James Long, Carl Junction; and the Gretchen A. Long law firm, Carl Junction; and $511 from a yard sale. All of Morgan’s $3,300 in proceeds were in loans the candidate made to his campaign.

Putnam’s campaign, in addition to his loan, cites contributions of $325 each from Leggett & Platt, Wayne Putnam and Miriam Putnam, all of Carthage, plus $4,875 in contributions from separate fund-raisers sponsored by Wayne Putnam and Frank Bartosh.
