Wyrick, Hart winners in Ottawa County

MIAMI, Okla. — Voters in Ottawa County elected a new commissioner, and Commerce voters named the city’s new mayor during Tuesday’s elections.
Challenger Gary Wyrick, 56, a Democrat from Wyandotte, defeated incumbent Kenneth Palmer, 63, of Miami, for the District 2 seat on the Ottawa County Commission, 548-468, according to unofficial results from the Ottawa County Election Board.
Wyrick said he was happy about the victory. He is virtually assured of the seat after the Nov. 4 general election because no other candidates are running.
“People are ready for a change,” Wyrick said. “Come January, I’ll hit the ground running and try to make changes in policy from what has been done over the last four years.”
During the campaign, Wyrick said he would be a full-time commissioner and quit his current job as a truck driver for a Minnesota company. He said Tuesday night that he will give two weeks’ notice before taking office in January.
Wyrick will serve a four-year term. The annual salary is $32,000.
Commerce residents, in a special election in conjunction with Tuesday’s primaries, chose a day-care operator to succeed Mayor Kenneth Duboise, who died in office.
Michael Hart, 25, defeated Kenneth Leggett, 56, by a tally of 148-103.
“I’m excited,” Hart said. “I’m looking forward to getting with the council, getting issues worked out and getting stuff done.”
Hart will be sworn in as mayor during an upcoming meeting. His term will end in April 2011. He will earn a monthly salary of $100.
