Crawford County attorney race too close to call By Greg Grisolano ggrisolano@joplinglobe.com GIRARD, Kan. — With 70 votes separating the two candidates, election officials in Crawford County are saying the race for county attorney is too close to call. “I would say so,” said Crawford County Clerk Don Pyle. Republican challenger Michael Gayoso Jr. on Tuesday received 7,543 votes, edging incumbent Democrat John Gutierrez, who collected 7,473 votes, according to complete, unofficial returns. Neither candidate was willing to declare victory or concede defeat Wednesday. “We knew we had an uphill battle when the number of registered Democrats outnumbers registered Republicans,” said Gayoso, a criminal defense attorney from Frontenac. “Hopefully the numbers will keep improving for us, and we’ll come out ahead.” Gutierrez said the contest is still up in the air. “This thing certainly isn’t over,” he said. “I’m pretty sure he got a lot of support from Frontenac, which is where he’s from. That may be the difference.” Pyle said the county has more than 800 provisional ballots that will need to be tallied before a winner can be declared. Pyle said those ballots include voters who may have gone to the wrong polling place, ballots from military personnel, and ballots that could not be read by voting machines. “We’ll have to go through them one by one, and check,” he said. Pyle said Gutierrez could retain his prosecutor’s post if he can overcome the 70-vote margin through the provisional ballots. “It would be a pretty big victory for John,” he said. “You usually think (provisional) ballots are going to mimic the percentages of regular votes.”
