Joplin man seeks top house post Richard said he is optimistic that Republicans will keep the House majority in 2008 “because we’re doing a good job of recruiting and funding candidates.”
He has been active in other House members’ election campaigns. In 2006, he made contributions totaling nearly $7,000 to the campaigns of 20 other House candidates. He also gave $21,000 to the House Republican Campaign Committee, which is used by the speaker to help candidates in close races. Richard said he recently helped organize a legislative coalition involving lawmakers representing Southwest Missouri south from Lebanon, to include Springfield, Branson, Joplin and the surrounding areas. “We think that, together, we can speak with a louder voice for Southwest Missouri,” he said. State Rep. Allen Icet, of St. Louis County, also is running for the speaker’s post, Richard said. Icet is chairman of the House Budget Committee. House membership Ron Richard was elected to the Missouri House in November 2002. He was a member of the Joplin City Council from 1990 to 1997, and served as mayor from 1994 to 1997.
