In Carthage early voter turnout at the Church of the Nazarene, 2000 Grand Avenue, was light. At shortly after 10 a.m. 41 people had voted in the one contested race on the ballot. Five candidates are vying for three seats on the Carthage R-9 School Board. Incumbents Tony Diggs, Jeff Jones and Danny Lambeth are seeking reelection and Ken Hogan and Alan Snow are also seeking spots on the board. In the other contest on the ballot City Council member Larry Ross is unopposed.
Dwane and Shirley Scowden of Carthage said they relied on familiarity when they voted for school board candidates. The couple opted to vote for Diggs, Jones and Hogan. Dewan Scowden said their voted for the three candidates they were personally acquainted with.
“We know Tony (Diggs) and (Jeff) Jones pretty well and we know (Ken) Hogan so that’s who we voted for,” he said.

Long, Eckersley win nods in 7th district
Billy Long, a Springfield auctioneer, real estate salesman and former radio talk show host, won the Republican nomination for Congress from Missouri’s 7th District on Tuesday, while the Democratic nod went to Scott Eckersley, an attorney from Kimberling City who at one time worked for former GOP Gov. Matt Blunt.
