Defendant gets suspended sentence in house arson case
A 27-year-old man received a suspended sentence Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court on an arson conviction for setting his home near Carthage on fire for insurance gain. Robert E. Baker pleaded guilty in August to second-degree arson in a plea agreement with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office that capped any prison time he might be assessed at no more than five years.

Jo Elis: Automated trash pickup begins
CARTHAGE Mo. — On scheduled days, trash pickup zones in Carthage are now a sea of blue. As of Friday, the last of the blue trash bins that are an integral part of the new trash system were delivered to homes and businesses. Under a new five-year contract with Allied Waste Services, all bins are being picked up via an automated collection system that uses a mechanized device to lift, empty and return the cart to curbside.

Carthage court clerk appointed
CARTHAGE, Mo. — A new Carthage Municipal Court clerk has been named, and other efforts are under way to improve court operations, police Chief Greg Dagnan said. Kim Christensen started work in the court post last Monday. She has been with the city for 10 years and was the department’s lead communications officer, the chief said. She fills a post that was vacated when a worker was fired for “policy violations” after officials discovered that a “significant” amount of money collected as court revenues appeared to be missing.

Jurors: Defendant not at fault in friend's death
A Jasper County jury decided Thursday that the operator of a Joplin salvage business should not be held financially responsible in the death of a man who was crushed by a storage box that was being unloaded from a truck. Jurors returned a verdict in favor of defendant John Meyer of John Meyer Truck and Foreign Salvage at the conclusion of a four-day trial in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin.

State awards building contract of crime lab to Springfield construction outfit
CARTHAGE, Mo. — Construction is to start next month on a new Missouri State Highway Patrol crime lab on a site just south of Carthage. A contract for the project has been awarded to Federal Construction Inc., of Springfield, according to an announcement from the Missouri Office of Administration.

The rafters will resound all night with the interpretations of local pianists Bill Sutter, Susan Cordell and her brother, Steven Spracklen. Spracklen is a professional musician currently on hiatus from his job as cruise director and ragtime performer for the Delta Queen Steamboat Co.

More than 200 entries highlight Maple Leaf Festival parade
CARTHAGE, Mo. — James Estes can’t remember exactly how long he has been coming to the Maple Leaf parade. “Well, I’m 27, so I guess 27 years,” he said Saturday morning as he, his wife and three sons waited for the parade. “The whole Maple Leaf thing, it’s a tradition. It has been here for a long time, and it’ll be here a long time after we’re gone.” The 43rd Maple Leaf Festival, which ended Saturday, drew tens of thousands of people with its parade, the highlight event. The parade hosted more than 200 entries, including marching bands from junior high schools, high schools and Missouri Southern State University; floats by local businesses and churches; and the Budweiser Clydesdales.

Child-sex offender gets two consecutive life terms
If a Jasper County jury threw the book at Joseph W. Mort six weeks ago, the judge hit him with a second volume Friday. The 51-year-old Mort was assessed two life sentences by a jury that found him guilty Sept. 1 of two counts of first-degree statutory sodomy. The rural Webb City man went to his sentencing hearing Friday in Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin hoping to get those life terms reduced by Circuit Judge David Mouton, the presiding judge at his trial.

Northern Jasper County land being eyed as wind farm site
Land in northern Jasper County near a site once eyed for a landfill now is being evaluated as a possible wind farm location. Representatives of Iberdrola Renewables met Thursday at Carthage Memorial Hall with about 200 landowners about potential property leases.

Crowds expected in Carthage for Maple Leaf parade, events
CARTHAGE, Mo. — Clydesdales, Cobras, crafts, cars — and crowds — will be the order of the day on Saturday for the final day of the 43rd annual Carthage Maple Leaf Festival.
