The animals — 28 dogs and one cat — were picked up at the request of the Sarcoxie Police Department because the Sarcoxie woman who owned them had been jailed and could not care for them. Michelle Greene, of the Carthage Humane Society, said all the animals appeared healthy, and that the action by the two animal shelters was not in response to animal neglect. “She wasn’t in jail for anything like that; it was unrelated,” Greene said. “She surrendered them to make sure they would be cared for.” The two animal shelters combined to pick up the dogs, described by Greene as “dogs of all varieties, shapes, sizes and colors.” Each shelter took 14 dogs, and Joplin also took the single cat, Greene said. Most of the dogs were in pens, though some “were not socialized,” said Melinda Davis, of Joplin Humane Society. “We had to catch them all, but we were able to in a reasonable amount of time,” Greene said. Both the shelters are at capacity, the two women said. “We’re always full, but we try to make arrangements to get more animals in,” Davis said. “These are going to be with us for a while, because it’s going to take some time for us to socialize them and make them adoptable.” Want to help?
