Published November 29, 2008 11:00 pm - Now that the holiday season has officially started, the next few weeks are jammed with area Christmas parades and holiday events.
About 60 entries are lined up for the Joplin Christmas parade slated for Saturday.
The number is low, according to Mary Romero, 2009 president-elect of the Joplin Jaycees, the group that puts on the Christmas parade each year, but does include floats and marching bands.
The procession starts at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at 20th Street in front of Walgreen’s and will proceed on Main Street to First Street.

Now that the holiday season has officially started, the next few weeks are jammed with area Christmas parades and holiday events.

The Jaycees extended the deadline for parade entries earlier this month because of a lack of entries. This is the 38th year for the parade, and only the third time in its history on a Saturday.

Romero said about 500 people will be involved in the parade that will feature candy, entries from businesses, non-profit groups and schools, the Carthage Shriners’ train, and Santa bringing up the end of the parade.

“People should come because it’s family oriented and it supports Joplin,” Romero said.

Refreshments will be available after the parade, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the First Christian Church, 409 W. Fourth St.

Other Christmas events that day in Joplin include breakfast with Santa from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Joplin Museum Complex, crafts with Santa from 2 to 4 p.m. at Spiva Center for the Arts, Christmas carols from 1 to 3 p.m. at the museum, a stained glass tour of St. Peter’s Catholic Church from 2 to 3 p.m., and a musical presentation from 4 to 5 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 509 S. Pearl Ave.

Ozark Christian College plans two presentations of the Living Christmas Tree at 3:30 and 7 p.m. Ticket information is available via 626-1212.

St. John’s Regional Medical Center will stage its eighth annual Christmas lighting ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday in the St. John’s courtyard.

Hot cocoa, refreshments and crafts will be available inside the Mercy Conference Center following the lighting of all the hospital’s holiday decorations.
