Meth sweep nets 55 arrests

By Jeff Lehr

A Jasper County Drug Task Force sweep targeting the production of methamphetamine led to the arrests of 55 people earlier this month, and more arrests are expected this week, law-enforcement officials said.

The drug task force and the narcotics unit of the Joplin Police Department are focusing on those who manufacture meth and those who supply them with the chemical precursors needed to produce the drug, according to a news release from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department.

The operation was conducted between Nov. 4 and Nov. 6, with 19 people being arrested for alleged possession of meth or ephedrine, three for alleged manufacturing, four for alleged possession of narcotics paraphernalia and one for allegedly receiving stolen property, the Sheriff’s Department said.

An additional 28 people were arrested on outstanding warrants.

The identities of those arrested and their charges had yet to be released by Monday. Sheriff’s Lt. Aaron Richardson said that was the result of the sheer number of arrests involved and the continuing nature of the operation. He said the names and charges are likely to be released in the days ahead.
