Three children hurt in accident on ‘kiddie coaster’

A derailment of cars on a ride Saturday morning at Route 66 Carousel Park west of Joplin resulted in minor injuries to three children, according to the business’s insurance company.

David Garrett, a spokesman for Haas and Wilkerson Insurance Co. in Shawnee Mission, Kan., said some of the cars at the back of a “kiddie coaster” ride came unhooked and ran off the track, spilling the cars’ occupants onto the ground. He said three children were taken to a hospital to be checked for injuries.

“It appears it was just bumps and bruises,” Garrett said.

The ride was shut down for the weekend and the Missouri Department of Public Safety was notified of the accident, Garrett said. The small roller coaster has an undulating track that runs about a foot to two feet off the ground, he said.

Mike O’Connell, DPS communications director, said a state investigator was sent to the scene and the incident remained under investigation on Monday.
