Fire damages Joplin home; no injuries cited

A fire Monday afternoon caused extensive damage to a two-story house in the 500 block of South Brownell Avenue in Joplin.

The Joplin Fire Department responded to a 4:35 p.m. call to the address. Two men, who were inside the house at the time, called for help and escaped the burning structure as firefighters arrived, according to Keith Stammer, public information officer for the Fire Department.

Stammer said smoke and flames were pouring out a rear entrance.

Fire crews fought the blaze with hand-held water lines and used chain saws to open ventilation holes, he said. The fire was extinguished at 6:18 p.m.

The blaze caused fire, smoke and water damage throughout the house rented by Emma Bell, who was away from home at the time.

No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross assisted occupants with finding accommodations overnight.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Tuesday, Stammer said.
