Joplin man faces counts of assault, burglary, guitar theft

A Joplin man is facing three felony charges after allegedly forcing his way into another man’s home, attacking him with a baseball bat and stealing his guitar.

William N. Humphrey, 51, was arrested Saturday night after an incident at the Joplin home of Gerald Hall, 53, and was charged with first-degree burglary, first-degree assault and stealing.

Police Lt. Matt Stewart said Hall shut the door on Humphrey when he showed up because of a previous antagonism between the acquaintances. Humphrey allegedly became angry and kicked in Hall’s back door, and assaulted him with an aluminum bat, hitting him in the head. The blow reportedly caused Hall to fall onto his coffee table, breaking its glass.

Stewart said Humphrey allegedly left with Hall’s acoustic guitar worth an estimated $1,000. Police recovered the guitar and the bat when they arrested Humphrey at his house, Stewart said.
