JOPLIN, Mo. — A father returning his children to their mother’s home south of Joplin Monday night got in a fight with another man and was stabbed several times.

Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said the stabbing of Jack T. Ballard, 32, took place in the Big Valley Mobile Home Park at 5517 Spurgeon Road. Ballard was taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, where he underwent surgery and other treatment for stab wounds to his chest and stomach and a cut across his forehead.

The hospital was listing Ballard in stable condition today, the sheriff said.

Copeland said warrants were being obtained for the arrest of Ballard’s alleged attacker, Jared S. Prier, 26, of Joplin. Prier is believed to be somewhere in Joplin, he said.
