Joplin police working two cases of sexual assault

Joplin police are working two sexual assault reports received over the weekend.

A 57-year-old man reported having been injected with a drug and forcibly sodomized by another man Saturday at an address north of downtown Joplin. Police Lt. Matt Stewart said the victim was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital, where a rape exam was conducted.

The man told police that he met his assailant at a convenience store in the downtown area and that they went to the other man’s home to consume alcohol. While they were there, the other man knocked him down, injected him with a drug and sexually assaulted him, he told police. The alleged assailant had not been located for questioning by police by Monday afternoon, Stewart said.

In a separate case, a male relative of a 17-year-old girl reported Sunday that she had been sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance about a month ago at her home in Joplin. Stewart said that case also remained under investigation Monday.
