Two burglary suspects caught in Newton County

Arrests come at end of vehicle pursuit

NEOSHO, Mo. — A pursuit following a burglary at a residence north of Neosho this afternoon ended with a crash of the fleeing vehicle at the Saginaw Trailer Park and the capture of two suspects.

Chief Deputy Chris Jennings of the Newton County Sheriff’s Department said Michael L. Phillips, 44, and his girlfriend, Amanda L. Waller, 39, both of Baxter Springs, Kan., were caught running from the crash site at the entrance of the mobile home park on Saginaw Road. Jennings said a third occupant of the burglary suspects’ vehicle remained at large at 4 p.m.

Jennings said the burglary took place about 1:30 p.m. at 14904 Gazelle Road, a short distance north of Neosho. A woman who was out in her backyard came around her house and spotted white Cadillac leaving her property. She then realized her front door had been kicked in and her home burglarized.

Deputies responding to the woman’s call for help spotted the suspect vehicle a short time later on Norway Road, Jennings said. A pursuit ensued that went as far as north as Interstate 44 before turning back south and ending in Saginaw, he said.

Jennings said a jewelry box taken from the victim’s home was recovered from the Cadillac. Charges of first-degree burglary were being sought against Phillips and Waller.
