Nevada man faces child abuse charge in chokehold case

A 33-year-old Nevada man is facing a felony count of child abuse for allegedly putting a chokehold on a 12-year-old boy a week ago at a rural Jasper County address.

James L. Morris was arrested Monday in connection with an incident July 26 at a residence on Forest Lane. He posted a $1,500 bond the next day and was released pending an initial court appearance.

A probable-cause affidavit states that Morris put his arm around the neck of the boy and tightened it until the boy’s eyes watered and he thought his Adam’s apple would be crushed.

Morris told an investigator with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department that the boy stepped on a mattress after being warned not to do that and then smirked at him. The affidavit states that Morris told the investigator that he put his arms across the boy’s chest and belly, and squeezed, and that he was just joking with him and did not intend to hurt him.
