Police arrest man in vehicle stolen from lot

A police patrol sergeant spotted a stolen car passing through downtown Joplin early Tuesday and arrested the driver.

Sgt. Trevor Duncan observed a 2002 Ford Escape at 3:38 a.m. near Seventh Street and Joplin Avenue, and pulled the vehicle over at Fifth Street and Sergeant Avenue.

Lt. Charla Geller said the car had been reported stolen the weekend of Feb. 8-10 from Crain Auto Sales at 2104 W. Seventh St. Someone entered the business through a window, stole a ring of keys and made off with the Ford Escape.

Geller said the ring of keys was recovered with Duncan’s arrest of Kevin R. Estes, 36, of rural Joplin. The Jasper County prosecutor’s office charged Estes with first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle, and he remained in custody at the city jail Tuesday night on $5,000 bond.
