Arson charges filed against man in wake of car fires

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Arson charges have been filed against a suspect who was nabbed in the area of two vehicle fires early Saturday in downtown Pittsburg.

Andrew J. Lewis, 29, of Pittsburg, made an initial appearance Tuesday in Crawford County District Court on two counts of arson. He remains in custody on $25,000 bond.

The suspect is accused of starting fires about 1 a.m. Saturday in the front seats of vehicles parked in the 400 block and the 500 block of North Broadway, according to Pittsburg police.

An officer spotted a man ducking down in the back seat of a third vehicle parked about a block from the second fire. The suspect got out and fled when the officer approached the vehicle. Crawford County sheriff’s deputies arrested the suspect a short time later near Ninth and Locust streets.

Lewis was charged initially with possession of stolen property and possession of marijuana. The arson charges were added after additional investigation, police said.
