Tree-cutting accident fatal to area man

A 53-year-old man died when a tree that he was cutting down fell on him Saturday afternoon on a rural property southwest of Joplin.

Mitch “Cobb” Wade, 53, was taken by ambulance to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin, where he was pronounced dead after the 5:15 p.m. accident at 3122 Apricot Drive, according to the Newton County sheriff’s office. His body was taken to Derfelt Funeral Home in Galena, Kan.

A service is planned for 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Galena. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.
