PITTSBURG, Kan. — A driver who fled police Tuesday night in Pittsburg was taken into custody a few hours later on an array of charges, including felony fleeing and endangerment of a child.
An officer attempted to stop a pickup truck about 11:30 p.m. at Quincy Street and Broadway after observing that the occupants were not wearing their seat belts, according to a news release from the Pittsburg Police Department. The driver refused to stop, and the officer pursued the truck until he observed that a child was inside the vehicle, at which point the officer ended his pursuit.
The truck later was spotted speeding on East Quincy Street, and Crawford County sheriff’s deputies soon located the vehicle stuck in a field outside the city limits. A 22-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy were found nearby, but the driver had fled. Police said the child was taken into protective custody at that point.
A few hours later, the driver, Ben E. Blunt Jr., 28, of Kansas City, Kan., was arrested and charged with felony eluding, felony obstruction, aggravated child endangerment, reckless driving, driving without insurance, and possession of marijuana.
