Joplin police are investigating a report that a man repeatedly demanded money from a clerk at a Northpark Mall store Monday before declaring that he was making an April Fools’ Day joke and leaving.
Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said the man and two male companions entered the Journeys store in the mall about 2:30 p.m.
“Two stayed by the door (while) one went to the register and demanded money,” Niess said.
Niess said the clerk refused, and the man repeated his demand more emphatically using a swear word. When the clerk again refused, the man declared “April Fools” and left the store with his companions, Niess said.
Niess said store employees did not believe the man had been joking and called police. The men were described as tall and smartly dressed, he said.
