Mount Vernon man assessed 15 years in prison in robbery case

A federal judge assessed a Mount Vernon man 15 years in prison Wednesday for robbing United Missouri Bank in Joplin in June of last year.

U.S. District Judge Greg Kays sentenced Wesley C. Osborne Jr., 35, of Mount Vernon, to the prison term without parole at a hearing in federal court in Springfield.

Osborne pleaded guilty in September to robbing the bank at 2106 S. Maiden Lane on June 18 by walking in and handing a teller a note demanding money. He jumped up on the counter, ordered bank employees down on the floor and made one of them open a cash drawer. He then grabbed money from the drawer, jumped back over the counter and fled.

The Quapaw Tribal Marshals Service arrested the defendant the next night at the Downstream Casino Hotel on a domestic assault and battery charge. A probable-cause affidavit filed by an FBI agent states that he was accused of assaulting a woman with whom he’d checked in at the hotel.

Osborne was still in custody at the Ottawa County Jail in Miami, Okla., on June 20 when an anonymous caller let Joplin police know that he was the man who’d robbed the bank. Joplin detectives and an FBI agent went to talk to him and he admitted having committed the robbery.

Investigators discovered that he was still in possession of one of five “bait bills” inserted in the bank loot. He also told where he stashed the T-shirt and bandanna he wore during the robbery in a trash can in an alley a short distance from the bank.
