Man tells police of being assaulted by two assailants

The assault of a man early Friday in downtown Joplin remains under investigation by police.

Sterling Halley, 65, suffered a blow to the back of his head with a baseball bat wielded by one of two men who jumped him about 1:45 a.m. in Artist Alley between Virginia and Kentucky avenues, according to police.

Halley was taken to Freeman Hospital West after being found lying unconscious in the street near Fourth Street and Murphy Boulevard a few minutes after the assault. He told police that he managed to fight off his assailants, neither of whom he knew, but he was left with a large cut on the back of his head.
