Joplin liquor store robbed

JOPLIN, Mo. — A lone gunman robbed the 7th Street Liquor & Smoke Shop in Joplin about 8:10 p.m. Wednesday and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and the clerk’s purse.

Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said the robber was wearing a bandanna across his face and a dark-colored sweatshirt with the hood pulled up and was displaying a handgun as he entered the store at 1221 W. Seventh St.

He banged on the store’s cash register with his fist when he didn’t think the clerk was complying fast enough with his demand for money, Niess said. After clearing out the cash drawer, he grabbed the clerk’s purse, which she tried to retain, and a brief struggle took place before he was able to leave with both the purse and the loot from the register.

Niess said the suspect is believed to have fled on foot in a northerly direction. An attempt to track the suspect with a police dog proved unsuccessful, he said.

The suspect was described as in his late 20s or early 30s, of a stocky build and about 5 feet 8 inches tall.
