JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Jasper County prosecutor’s office has charged a 48-year-old man with a felony weapon offense after authorities say a shot was fired over the weekend near Joplin.
Jasper County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call to 2154 N. Strawberry Lane, where a man reportedly had been in an argument with a woman and allegedly pointed a loaded gun at her before firing it into the air.
A news release from the Sheriff’s Department states that Terry D. Beetem was arrested at 9:40 p.m. Sunday. Joplin police records, however, show Beetem being stopped by police about 4:20 p.m. Saturday at 21st Street and Annie Baxter Avenue after alleged threats to a woman at the Strawberry Lane address.
Joplin police Cpl. Chuck Niess said police had received information that Beetem was armed and might be on his way to harm others at an address on Empire Avenue. A search of his vehicle reportedly turned up a handgun and rifle, Niess said.
Beetem was arrested in connection with allegedly driving while intoxicated and later was charged with unlawful use of a weapon in the alleged offense with the unidentified woman.

The nonfatal shooting of a 25-year-old man at a Joplin residence on May 13 has been deemed justified by authorities. Jacob B. Boykin, 21, of Joplin, shot Justin S. Johnson, 25, of Carterville, once in the chest with a small-caliber handgun at 5260 E. Sunny Acres Lane.

Two plead guilty to post-tornado wire theft
Two defendants pleaded guilty Monday to stealing copper wire from utility poles in the wake of the May 22, 2011, tornado that struck Joplin. Timothy M. Silveria, 45, of Joplin, and Nycoa K. Kracht, 32, of Laurel, Ind., entered open pleas of guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court to felony counts of theft from a public utility.
