UPDATE: Police sweep completed; campus secure

JOPLIN, Mo. — Campus police have completed a sweep of the residence halls at Missouri Southern State University prompted by reports of a suspicious person in the vicinity of the dormitories.

The university said in a news release at 4:40 p.m. that the residence halls, which were locked down as a precautionary measure following the issuance of a campus alert at 2:43 p.m., have been searched and determined to be secure.

Students had reported seeing a suspicious person, possibly in possession of a gun, in a field between the Mills H. Anderson Public Safety Center and the residence halls. The person reportedly walked away in the direction of the residence halls.

“The safety of our students is our utmost priority,” Darren Fulton, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management, said in the news release. “Upon notification of a potentital incident, the residence halls were locked down and a thorough search of each hall was completed by the university police department.”
