Michael Manis charged with Joplin bank robbery

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin police today announced the arrest and charging of a Carthage man with the March 14 armed robbery of the Great Southern Bank at 1232 S. Range Line Road.

Michael D. Manis, 52, was arrested Tuesday following an investigation of the Joplin Police Department that also involved the FBI, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department and Webb City police. Manis has been charged with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action and is being held at the Joplin City Jail on a $70,000 bond.

Police said in a news release announcing his arrest that Manis is being considered as a possible suspect in unsolved bank robberies in Webb City and Springfield, although charges have yet to be filed in those cases.

In this month’s robbery in Joplin, a man armed with a handgun and wearing a dark shirt and dark pants, sunglasses and a stocking cap entered the bank, demanded money and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Witnesses had estimated the robber to be in his late 20s or early 30s.
