A man who tried to rob a Joplin convenience store Wednesday morning punched a clerk in the face but ran away without getting any cash.
Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said a man entered the Kum & Go store at 3504 S. Range Line Road about 1:45 a.m. and approached the clerk with his shirt pulled up to obscure his face and his other hand in his jacket as if he had a gun.
“He told the guy to hand over the money, and the clerk said, ‘Show me the weapon,’” Niess said.
The would-be robber apparently did not have a gun and did not get any money, although he did punch the clerk, Niess said.
The man, who ran in a northerly direction, was described as being about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a thin build and wearing a brown leather jacket and a black fedora. Investigators had not made an arrest in the case by late Thursday afternoon.
