Joplin man faces felony charge; victim also charged

A 44-year-old Joplin man has been charged with felony domestic assault in connection with a disturbance a week ago at 615 E. 18th St.

Erich S. Shaner was arrested after a dispute with his girlfriend, Yolanda D. Smith, 29, during which he allegedly grabbed her by the throat and held her down. Joplin police Lt. Matt Stewart said Shaner also allegedly threatened Smith with a pocketknife. He was charged with second-degree domestic assault.

Smith, who did not require medical attention for injuries, also was taken into custody for an alleged violation of a protection order that Shaner had obtained on her.
