Joplin man draws 15 years in prison for molesting girl

A judge sentenced a 36-year-old Joplin man to 15 years in prison Monday for sexual abuse of a 9-year-old girl.

Circuit Judge David Dally assessed Derik E. Keene the prison term at a sentencing hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Keene pleaded guilty Feb. 3 to first-degree statutory sodomy in a plea agreement limiting the prison time he might receive to 15 years. The offense carries from five years to life in prison under state law.

The conviction pertains to sexual contact the defendant had with the girl on Nov. 4, 2011, at a residence in Joplin. A probable-cause affidavit states that Keene admitted to investigators that he also had molested her on a previous occasion.
