Authorities say suspect discarded 1,900 pills in backpack

A court document alleges that a suspect in a burglary at Stones Corner Pharmacy had about 1,900 pills in his possession when he fled the scene of a traffic accident one week ago.

Shannon D. Albright, 28, discarded a backpack when he fled on foot following a traffic accident June 27 near the intersection of 20th Street and Schifferdecker Avenue, a probable-cause affidavit that became available Friday in Jasper County Circuit Court alleges.

The backpack contained about 1,900 pills believed to have been stolen in a break-in at the pharmacy the previous night. Many of the pills were controlled narcotics, such as fentanyl, oxycodone, oxycontin and morphine sulfate, the affidavit states. Albright was located about an hour after the accident and was taken into custody for resisting arrest and a parole violation.

But the connection to the pharmacy break-in was not made until a couple of days later after Albright was caught in alleged possession of more narcotic pills inside Joplin City Jail.

The affidavit indicates that Albright was on parole for a prior burglary conviction at the time of his arrest. The felony counts filed against him since June 27 include possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute, possession of controlled substances and assault on a corrections officer.
