Coroner: Death likely to be ruled accidental overdose

— The Jasper County coroner anticipates ruling the death of a 24-year-old man involved in a disturbance Friday night at a convenience store in Airport Drive as an accidental drug overdose.

Ryne S. Millsap, of Springfield, died at Freeman Hospital West where he was taken after an incident in the Fastrip convenience store at 5869 N. Main St.

Jasper County sheriff’s deputies were called to the address at 11:37 p.m. Friday regarding a man who reportedly had locked himself in a restroom of the store, and was hitting the walls and screaming.

Capt. Derek Walrod of the sheriff’s office said Millsap had come out of the restroom by the time deputies arrived and contacted him. But he then suffered an apparent cardiac arrest and was taken to Freeman Hospital West, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Walrod said.

An autopsy was conducted Monday in Springfield, and Coroner Rob Chappel said he anticipates ruling the death an accidental drug overdose unless toxicology tests prove otherwise. Chappel said Millsap informed deputies prior to being transported to the hospital that he had taken a significant amount of methamphetamine.
