Five people facing felony drug charges after stops by police

JOPLIN, Mo. — Vehicle stops conducted by Joplin police in the past week have resulted in felony drug charges being filed against five suspects.

Robert D. Stevens, 20, of Joplin, was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance after police reportedly found 38 grams of marijuana in his possession during a traffic stop Dec. 28 near 17th Street and Maiden Lane.

Charles R. Gilbert, 49, of Galena, Kan., was charged with three felony counts of possession of a controlled substance after a traffic stop Saturday in the 600 block of Porter Avenue. A police report states that Gilbert was stopped and arrested for driving while his license was revoked. The report alleges that some Xanax pills were discovered in his possession but does not explain why three counts were filed.

An officer stopped a vehicle Sunday near Seventh and Main streets and served an outstanding warrant on the driver, Brad W. Wiegel, 36, of El Dorado Springs. Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said a felony count of possession was added when a search of the vehicle allegedly turned up a syringe containing methamphetamine.

A vehicle stop Monday at Seventh Street and Jackson Avenue led to the arrest of Christopher S. Long, 44, of Joplin, on a charge of driving while his license was suspended. Police Lt. Brian Lewis said a bag containing methamphetamine allegedly was found on Long during booking procedures at the Joplin City Jail, and a felony count of possession was filed against him.

Two people were taken into custody after an officer stopped a vehicle Monday at 26th Street and Jackson Avenue. The driver, Wayne E. Flynn, 51, of Joplin, was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver after several bags containing more than 10 grams of the drug allegedly were discovered in his possession. A 47-year-old female passenger was charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
