Teacher evacuates pupils from building; no injuries reported

PITTSBURG, Kan. — A teacher on Monday hustled children out of a church’s preschool building in Crawford County when a fire broke out near a heating vent.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department said the fire started about 10 a.m. in the building next to Covenant Harvest Church at 615 S. U.S. Highway 69 near Pittsburg.

The preschool teacher, Patricia Marinelli, told sheriff’s deputies that she took her students out of the building when they first noticed smoke. Marinelli went back inside to see if she could put out the fire but was forced back outside by thick smoke.

The Baker Township Fire Department arrived on the scene and extinguished the blaze, but the building sustained fire, smoke and water damage, the sheriff’s office said. No injuries were reported.
