Man pleads guilty to exposing himself to 7-year-old

— A Marionville man pleaded guilty Monday in Jasper County Circuit Court to sexual misconduct with a child about six months ago in Joplin.

Michael D. Burton, 44, pleaded guilty to the offense in a plea agreement with the Jasper County prosecutor’s office that would limit the prison time he might be assessed to three years. The Class D felony offense with which he was charged carries up to five years in prison.

Burton exposed himself to a 7-year-old child Aug. 4 of last year in Joplin, according to a probable-cause affidavit. Burton reportedly told a detective who interviewed him about the matter that he is sexually infatuated with children and that he needs psychiatric help, according to the affidavit.

Circuit Judge David Dally delayed formal action on the plea bargain and ordered the completion of a sentencing-assessment report. He set Burton’s sentencing hearing for March 25.
