Man waives hearing in slaying of wife; trial division next

A Joplin man waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday on a charge that he killed his estranged wife.

Rondias L. Webb, 35, waived the hearing in Jasper County Circuit Court and was ordered bound over for trial on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is accused in the Nov. 17 shooting death of Monica Webb.

Associate Judge Richard Copeland set March 4 for Webb’s initial appearance in a trial division of the court.

Monica Webb, 36, had obtained a protection order against her husband in September after he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic assault in connection with an incident at an apartment they had shared.

She later reported that he violated that order Nov. 4 when he approached her in a Joplin bar and informed her that he knew where she had moved to get away from him.

The alleged violation led to the mailing of a summons for Rondias Webb, but not the issuance of an arrest warrant. Two weeks later, he allegedly shot and killed her inside her new address, according to court records.

After his wife’s shooting, Rondias Webb shot himself but survived, police said.
