Judge orders man to stand trial in assault case

A Joplin man has been ordered bound over for trial on a felony assault charge stemming from the alleged beating of his girlfriend in October of last year.

Ira A. Jones, 43, waived his right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday in Jasper County Circuit Court on a charge of first-degree assault. Associate Judge Richard Copeland set the defendant’s initial appearance in a trial division of the court for May 7.

Jones is accused of pushing Lisa Heimann, 48, against a wall inside their home on North Pearl Avenue on Oct. 22, separating her shoulder and breaking her collarbone, according to a probable-cause affidavit. He then allegedly choked her to the point that she could barely breathe, the affidavit alleges.
