A Joplin man whose battery was stolen out of his truck helped catch the alleged thief by performing a little of his own detective work.

Police Cpl. Chuck Niess said Michael England parked his pickup truck Saturday morning in a lot in the 1800 block of West Seventh Street and went inside a restaurant. When he came back out, he discovered that the battery had been stolen out of his truck.

On a hunch, England went to USA Metals Recycling at 2002 W. Seventh St. and confronted a man who was there attempting to turn in his battery for cash, Niess said. Police were notified, and Nicholas R. Patton, 28, of Seneca, was arrested and charged with felony tampering with a vehicle.
