JOPLIN, Mo. —
The suspect in the bank robbery in Joplin on Monday had a $20 “bait bill” from the loot he is accused of stealing still on him when he was arrested the following night at the Downstream Casino Hotel.
A probable-cause affidavit written by an FBI agent and filed in federal court in Springfield states that Wesley C. Osborne Jr., 35, was carrying a $20 bill that matched the serial number of one of five bait bills inserted in the loot taken from United Missouri Bank at 2106 S. Maiden Lane.
The bill was in the Joplin man’s alleged possession when the Quapaw Tribal Marshals Service arrested him about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the hotel in a domestic assault and battery case. Osborne had checked into the hotel with a female companion whom he is accused of assaulting.
Osborne was still sitting in the Ottawa County Jail in Miami, Okla., on that charge when an anonymous caller let Joplin police know Wednesday that he was the man who robbed the bank.
Detectives and an FBI agent went over to talk to him at the jail. The affidavit says Osborne admitted committing the crime and detailed how he had done it.
For instance, he told them where he stashed the T-shirt and the bandanna he wore as a do-rag. A woman found the two articles of clothing discarded behind her trash can in the 2100 block of Harlem Avenue, one block east of the bank.
The FBI agent also cites in the affidavit a description of the bank robber that varies significantly from an initial description released by police. The FBI agent wrote that the suspect was described as 5 feet 6 inches tall and about 140 pounds. Initial information from police described him as 5 feet 10 inches and 170 pounds.

Kracht, 32, of Laurel, Ind., entered open pleas of guilty in Jasper County Circuit Court to felony counts of theft from a public utility.
