Suspect in stolen truck stops train

Jasper County deputies on Thursday afternoon pursued a suspect in a stolen truck to Kansas, where he forced a train to come to an emergency stop before finally surrendering.

Capt. Derek Walrod of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department said the pursuit of Joe Bob Green, 32, of Joplin, began near Carl Junction.

Deputies received a report of a stolen vehicle in the area about 3 p.m. and tried to stop the pickup truck Green was driving. Crawford County (Kan.) deputies took up the pursuit as Green crossed into Kansas on U.S. Highway 171 and turned north onto 260th Street.

Kansas deputies made two unsuccessful attempts to deflate the tires of the fleeing truck before a third attempt met with some success, according to Crawford County Sheriff Dan Peak. Green allegedly swerved the truck at a deputy deploying the tire deflation devices on the third attempt and kept going despite the compromising of his tires, the sheriff said.

The truck turned east onto 620th Avenue and then north onto 270th Street before heading down some Kansas City Southern Railway tracks. The truck was about a half-mile down the tracks, with a train fast approaching from the north, when the suspect jumped out and fled on foot back across the state line into Missouri, the sheriff said.

Peak said the engineer was forced to come to an emergency stop to avoid hitting the suspect or the deputies pursuing him.

Barton County (Mo.) deputies, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and Arma and Mulberry police assisted in the subsequent search for the suspect on foot. But Green eventually approached a property owner in the area and asked that law enforcement be informed of where he was. The sheriff said the suspect, who was injured in the course of the chase, was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Missouri.

In Kansas, charges of fleeing and eluding, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, reckless driving and trespassing on railroad property were being sought. A felony count of resisting arrest was filed against him by the Jasper County prosecutor.

Walrod said the 1989 Chevrolet truck had been reported stolen Tuesday from Del Rio’s Bordertown Cafe in Webb City.
