Joplin man faces sex-abuse charge

A 42-year-old Joplin man was arrested Tuesday on a charge that he sexually abused a 13-year-old girl last year.

Dustin J. Damrill was taken into custody by police at his home at 1610 S. Grand Ave. and was charged with first-degree statutory rape.

Joplin police Cpl. Chuck Niess said the mother of the alleged victim first contacted police about the matter on Oct. 27. Two days earlier, she had become suspicious of Damrill’s interest in her daughter and had spoken to the girl about him, Niess said.

The girl eventually disclosed to the mother that Damrill allegedly had been having sexual contact with her since August of last year, Niess said. In the course of the investigation, the girl was interviewed at the Children’s Center in Joplin.

Damrill remained in custody Wednesday at Joplin City Jail with bond set at $5,000.
