Elementary school locked down briefly after shots reported

GOODMAN, Mo. — Goodman Elementary School was locked down for a time on Wednesday after the McDonald County Sheriff’s office received a report of shots fired at a residence in the city.

“It was just a precaution, and we lifted the lockdown after we checked everything out,” said Mike Hall, McDonald County sheriff.

He said the department’s emergency dispatch center received a call from a neighbor who believed they heard a gunshot from a house on Highland Terrace.

“That’s a couple streets away from the school, so we notified the school and they locked down just to be safe,” he said.

Deputies responded to the house and found four family members arguing, but no weapons were located and no charges were filed, the sheriff said.

The school is in the Neosho School District. Superintendent Dan Decker said apparently the reporting party mistook a slamming car door for a gunshot. He said school officials did a great job in initiating the lockdown.
