Oklahoma escapee spotted in firetruck, arrested near Galena

GALENA, Kan. — An Oklahoma prison escapee who reportedly stole a brush truck from the Boley (Okla.) Fire Department was apprehended Wednesday afternoon north of Galena by deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.

Adam J. Holder, 23, escaped from the John H. Lilley Correctional Center in Boley sometime after midnight Tuesday, authorities said. After escaping, he allegedly broke into the Boley fire station and stole a 2009 Ford brush truck.

Holder and the firetruck were spotted on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike heading northeast.

He went through a toll gate, telling the gate attendant that he was delivering the firetruck to a fire department in Missouri. Turnpike attendants became suspicious and called police.

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves said his department was notified at 9:44 a.m. Wednesday of the escape and that Holder might be headed for Southeast Kansas.

Deputies began a search for the vehicle. At 12:26 p.m., a resident spotted the stolen truck on the Missouri-Kansas state line, entering into Kansas.

The resident continued to update law enforcement on the location of the vehicle. When authorities arrived in the area of Southeast 100th Road and Boston Mills Road, north of Galena, the suspect was located and taken into custody without incident.

Groves said Holder, who was incarcerated for burglary and theft, was being held Wednesday in the Cherokee County Jail, pending extradition to Oklahoma.

Groves said officials at the prison are investigating how Holder escaped.
